Dr. McFarland is a member of the Board of Trustees of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, a Board Member of Atlantic Shores Christian Schools in Virginia Beach, VA, a member of the Board of Directors, (Kids Across America), Branson, Missouri, a Board Member of the Crisis Pregnancy Center of Tidewater, Inc. (Norfolk, Virginia) and the President of the Fundamental Baptist Fellowship Association.
Pastor McFarland, as he is affectionately referred, is a Bible preaching, teaching, minister of the Word. He is founder and Chancellor of the Angelos Bible College. His radio ministry, "The Joyous Sound", which airs daily on a local AM station, exemplifies his belief that the only road to successful Christian living is the direct application of the Word of God to one's life. In 1995, he started the Joyous Sound Education and Enrichment Center, which currently enrolls children, Pre-K through third grade.
Pastor McFarland worked ten years for the Federal Government as a Program Specialist. He answered the call to preach the Gospel in 1972. Before coming to Calvary Evangelical Baptist Church in 1982, he served as an Assistant Pastor at the Evergreen Baptist Church in Washington DC, and as an Evangelist for six years while attending Bible College and Seminary. His vision is to make Calvary "one of the most effective Christ-centered, multicultural churches in the Hampton Roads region." Through the anointing power of God working through Pastor McFarland, the church has grown spiritually as well as numerically.
Pastor McFarland and Doris, his wife of forty-one years, are the parents of four daughters and one son. They are the the proud grandparents of 12 grandchildren. Their two oldest daughters, Allena and Dorena reside in Franklin, Tennessee with their families. Allena and husband Gary Bell, CPA, have four children, Tres, Chandler, Avery and Grayson. Dorena and husband Pastor Chris Williamson have four children, Dante, Christa, Chase, and Charis. Chris is the senior pastor of Strong Tower Bible Church (www.stbch.org). The middle daughter, Matina, a Masters Degree recipient and former children's director at Calvary Evangelical Baptist Church resides in Little Rock, Arkansas with her husband, Baron Taylor. Regina, the fourth daughter, is a former Associate Dean of Women and Adjunct Professor at Liberty University. She and her husband Jua Robinson are presently in Boston, MA and are in the process of planting a church, Heart Change Fellowship (www.heartchangefellowship.org.) They have two children, daughter Jordyn and son, Josiah. Philip, the only son, is married to the former Stefani Bryant and received his Doctorate of Ministry Degree in May 2006. He presently serves as the Youth Pastor of Calvary Evangelical Baptist Church. He and Stefani have two sons, James Allen and Timothy Carl.
Pastor McFarland acknowledges and is strongly persuaded that “whatever you do in word or deed do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” (Colossians 3:17).
